Although it sounds nice, I think it is a bit risky. They like to eat everything so they are bound to eat soil etc. And, if they defecate in the cage, any substrate type material harbors too many parasites....they are messy poopers for sure! Then they may eat it after they go. Plus, some more natural materials and plants carry bugs and possibly insecticides. If you had an extremely large outdoor type environment, I don't think it would be as problematic, but an indoor cage may be tough to keep clean.
