My yearling iguana had surgery about 4 weeks ago to fix a prolapsed cloaca. It was very swollen. She just got her stitches out last week and she has been fine until tonight. I went to retrieve her from her bath soak and found it had prolapsed once again, though not as much (she had pooped). I then soaked her for 30 min in cool water with lots of sugar. Then another 30 min in warm water with sugar. I don't really see any improvement (just like last time). She has been wormed twice since the last incident. That surgery was originally a whopping $500 dollars, but we got them down to $300. However, I don't think I can afford another surgery. Plus she almost didn't wake up from the anesthesia. I'm at a loss. What else besides parasites can cause a prolapse? Do some iguanas just have chronic prolapses? She is eating zoo meds dry food and fresh fruits, greens, and veggies.
Right now she is back in her cage with petrolium jelly on the exposed tissue. I only pray that the swelling goes down so I can try to push it back in. Of course this has to happen right before x-mas and I don't even know if the vet is open tomorrow (lovely $75 emergency fee). I know if the tissue does not get put back in she will die. I don't know what to do.
Help.
Jessica
