Try looking through all of the sites just listed under "Adoption" here at Kingsnake. Count the number of iguanas that you find "available" for adoption. When you're done there come back and let me know. From Friday to 10:30 this morning I've received 6 calls to take in more. You can have all of those as well... In reality it's not that easy because I'd first have to determine whether or not you're qualified to care for them.
I have over $1000 invested in UV bulbs ALONE here and that's just what is running at the moment. I'd be more than willing to take in "any unwanted ones that people have to offer" as well. The problem with THAT thinking is that very rarely do people also want to give up an appropriate enclosure with the iguana OR several thousand dollars to properly care for it. Read into "proper care" providing it with heat, humidity, basking/UV, proper diet and medical care if necessary. Providing heat, humidity and basking requires, in my case, home heating oil and electricity. This month's electric bill alone was over $300. Oil just cost me another $260. Every week 50 pounds of salad is made for the iguanas here. THAT takes time to get the supplies as well as gas, 2-3 hours of prep time and another hour to store the salad. Where does it get stored? In a refrigerator - ooops more electricity. Starting to get the picture ?
The iguanas that I personally have I'm more than happy to have. The iguanas that I take in to rehab I take in as I can due to space/financial constraints because there are ZERO shelter facilities that willingly take in reptiles in my state. One by one they all find me and call me to take them. EVERY one of the igs that come in gets the same proper treatment. Granted, this all can be easily taken out of context as many things can be via the internet but when you say that you'd "gladly take in any unwanted ones that people have to offer" I honestly don't think that you have a clue as to what that would entail. I've got nothing but respect for every animal that comes through my doors, which at last count is upwards of 200. What I will openly admit that I hate is the blatant IGNORANCE displayed by individuals that obtain iguanas, big pythons, crocs etc. who don't do the necessary research into the animal, abuse/neglect it nearly to the point of death while it still grows larger than they "thought" it would and THEN expect me to take the animal off their hands for FREE because they don't have the time/money/intelligence to rectify the problem that THEY created in the first place. And, by the way, I personaly consider YOUR thinking to fall right in line with that. Thinking such as yours is just as responsible for the vast number of abused/neglected/unwanted iguanas currently out there.
Like I said, if they DO hatch, and I consider that to be a BIG if, you're more than welcome to take 20-100 iguana hatchlings in that didn't need to be hatched in the first place. Just don't ask me for help if that time comes. I've got my hands full with the unwanted iguanas that have ALREADY been neglected and are now not wanted.
