:I wanted an iguana, so I researched and researched, I has never seen an iguana up close and personal until I went to a show and saw two iguana piled on top of another In a perhaps a twenty gallon tank, and these were bigger iguanas. Then my research really started, seeing how many iguanas there are out there and how some times cruel they were treated. I did adopt an iguana and may adopt another, but now, that is the only way I would go, is to adopt a already unwanted iguana. Here is where I say that unless you go to rescues and see for yourself all the unwanted iguanas you have not learned yet all that is to learn. No one is getting down on you, it is just that you need to see both sides. I am sure that if you do that and check them out on line as well you will understand what people are trying to say and know in your heart, because you love iguanas that you would not want one of your babies to end up unwanted. Just my opinion.
:
::Here's where you're wrong. I DON'T want all of the iguanas that I have. I'd MUCH rather be able to concentrate on simply caring for what I consider my "personal" pets. Unfortunately, there are very few if any shelters in this country that are willing or properly equipped to handle ANY form of reptile let alone iguanas. And as much as I do love these green critters I don't feel that they should be available to any schmuck that has the sometimes $5 to purchase one because in many of those cases the purchaser has absolutely no knowledge of either husbandry or expense to PROPERLY care for an iguana. As far as someone "mating two iguanas to get ours" the greater reality of it is that the first couple hundred thousand were most likely removed from the wild to fill the demand. After that, nests were raided to collect unhatched eggs or in extreme cases gravid females were literally gutted in the wild and the eggs removed that way. These days, fortunately/unfortunately GGI's are farmed for the industry for the most part. Ever find out just how many hatchlings live past the first year of their existance? The world would be a much less crowded place if humans had the same mortality rate.....
::The "responsible" thing to do would be to make sure that the eggs weren't given the chance to hatch in the first place thereby eliminating any possibility of HAVING to find "caring responsible homes". "Caring responsible homes" are few and far between when it comes to iguanas. Just ask the 14 igs that have been here with me anywhere from 8 months to 2 years. Offer homes for HER iguanas? Or the 30, 40 or 50+ that someplace like Colorado Reptile Rescue has. I can't find enough "caring responsible homes" for the iguanas that I already have here. WHY would I offer to take on these ESPECIALLY when the problem could be prevented before the eggs hatch. If "we all know the situation with the overpopulation of iguanas" then why the H**L further contribute to it?
::Tell you what, if/when the igs are hatched let's have Georgia microchip all of the igs. That way if any of them end up in rescue or shelter situations we'll be able to identify them and then we'll be able to RETURN them to both you and Georgia to find yet another "caring responsible home" - how's that sound? "It's a wonderful experience" my a**....
Ya know what.......Get a grip. If you did not want the ones that you have then why in the world do you have them. They can feel when they are not wanted so you having them in the house with a hateful person like you is actually harming them. I have been on the end of takeing in unwanted reptiles in general especially iguanas and every one I have taken in I have loved and nursed them back to good health and found them good homes. I would gladly take in any unwanted ones that people have to offer. And if Georgia wants to have babies, more power to her. I will be ready to take them in if they come back =-P
