:I'm curious as to whether or not you have had an opportunity to perform any testing or use mercury vapor bulbs at all and what results you've personally discovered if any.
The reasons why I will not try any of the MV products is discussed in my Mercury Vapor Heat & UV Lamps article. To more neatly (and concisely ;) sum up my take on these products, I just wrote a new one, Hidden Dangers.
There is a study going on in Finland. Preliminary results include the following about the Active UV product they tested: "As part of the test, a statement was formulated as to the safety of Active UVHeat in domestic use. It turned out that the amount of UV is so high, that human safety limits are exceeded at 30 cm distance from the 100W flood lamp surface in 40 minutes and at distance of 1,5 metres in 6 1/2 hours. So without effective shading of stray light, it cannot be safely used indoors for a normal 12 hrs / day."
Just because the manufacturers of these made-for-reptile MV products have found a regulatory loophole to slip through doesn't make their product safe for reptiles or their human caretakers. Just because these products are being used in zoos doesn't mean they are safe either, given that the zookeepers are looking at the same product claims pet keepers are, and are ignoring the same body of work on the health problems associated with mercury and mercury vapor that these MV product manufacturers, their customers and pet-keepers are.
