Large Rubbermaid conatiners have worked well for us. If you're concerned about heat, you can pick up a power inverter for all of $40 or so and use that to run a heating pad or any other heat source. Disposable heat packs and water bottles are also an option.
For cages, try looking at PVC designs. Whip out a couple of panels, hold them together with wingnuts and bolts and it can probably be set up and broken down in under an hour. Make it a size that can be transported in the car and at least Phil will have SOME room when he gets to Grandma's house, can still get his UV exposure if you bring a lamp with you and still be protected from the cat.
