I've seen this with my own dog.
Terriers in general have a funny attitude, not to mention an incredibly stubborn head, and if they wanna mind their own business, they will.
So, sometimes I'd call my dog (a wire fox terrier) by his name "Tipsy!" (he loves beer, hence the name). No sign of him even noticing or listening. But if I call him "baby boy" he'd turn around sometimes...maybe hoping for a treat. He cracks me up!
I think animals cannot possibly choose their names, since they don't even know what a name is until we give them one.
The actual sound of "boo baby" from your voice probably got his attention, and maybe sometimes you or others may call him/her "baby" when giving a treat or petting it or bathing it (I used to with my iguana;).
I don't mean to spoil your miracle, it is a sweet story, but let's not forget that these sort of things usually happen only on the screen.
However, since it seemed to respond to that name, why not stick to it? After all, iguanas can be pesky little monsters when they want to! LOL
Regards,
