XTA,

If done properly the pet store can not only make this successful for the animal and for them. The pet store I deal with on a weekly basis (and deliver their greens) does this practice as well. However were many stores would sell immediatly sight unseen, this store does require a waiting period and and adult. Iguanas there (even 6 inch juvs) do not go out until they are healthy again, with a vet removing even abcesses and administering neocal and vitamin shots. Also the average price tag on them is around $100.00 which blocks out the looky loos. Then again the store has pics from hot rock burns. They will sell you a hot rock but they want you to know what you are getting into with them and then they will give you a card at the checkout with a vet on it for when your herp burns itself. Usually at that point everyone changes their mind. They have had 2 in stock for 3 years. Same two. But as I said, it depends on the store and this can be done. Just needs someone to think of the animals first. All of their herps are either rescues or a sprinkling of special ones are local breeders. Nothing is imported or purchased from wholesalers. In fact they take the same approach with their small animals as well as to some extent their birds. Just wanted to let you know that this can work. Just takes the right kind of people.

:That is the pet store I go to for crickets & worms for my beardie. I go back and forth as to whether they are good or not. I think they are better than a lot of petstores, but I see things from time to time that bother me. They stopped selling igs for awhile which made me very happy. Now they have been selling them again. They also take in iguanas people don't want and sell them. I am not sure how I feel about this because on one hand, it is better for the iguana to get a second chance...and they are just trying to recoup some costs they spend on the animal, but it still doesn't seem ethical to sell an animal that has major problems and will probably require a lot of extra care to get back on track. (at least it may discourage impulse people but I worry that some newbies will see a big cool lizard without realizing what is wrong with it and therefore, not properly caring for it anyway). They are knowlegeable there, but I'm not sure if they point out to people that the lizard has MBD or whatever.

:I was in there once when they turned down a full grown beardie someone was trying to pawn off of them. They looked at it and immediately saw everything that was wrong with it. It made me sad though because I felt for the poor beardie and wondered who could give up such a wonderful animal. People suck!

:My advice is if you know what is involved (responsibility-wise)and realize how difficult it is to keep an iguana...do some more research. Maybe you will then feel you would like to take this iguana home. Maybe not. Good luck.
