Well I just use the cheap Zoomed mechanical ones for inside the cage, then I have a couple with probes that are digital like you mentioned. These I don't mount but keep them outside the cage and just check basking spots or temps wherever I need. I like them portable. They don't really need to stay in the cage all the time anyway. Even though people rag on the mechanical/analog ones, they actually are fairly accurate when mounted for ambient temps in the cage. I find they are not as great right under the basking spots if the temps go over 100.

On questionable basking spots I use 3 different ones to check them so I can make sure I am more accurate. I figure 3 different ones shouldn't all be wrong! (different styles/brands)

In one of my smaller cages I use a temp controller that shuts the lights off for short periods when it gets too hot. That is for my bearded dragon though.
