About Tums. Tums is an antacid, which happens to contain calcium. People hear this and assume that it's a good calcium source. Unfortunately, calcium and Vit. D (which is required for calcium absorption) require an acidic environment in the GI tract to properly be absorbed into the body. Once again, Tums is an antacid, so the majority of the calcium it contains goes right down the poop chute (pardon the expression). If this weren't bad enough, antacids over time begin to do ugly things to the lining of the GI tract. I would like to stress to everyone reading this that I know this to hold true for HUMAN physiology, and not reptiles. I'm making a large assumption that calcium & Vit. D binding occurs similarly in reptiles. If anyone out there in forumland knows the answer, I would welcome a reply. For the meantime, I would have to recommend against the use of Tums as a calcium source for any of your pets (reptile or human).
