Tail Skin Sore

Gordo is a 9 year old, 4.5 foot green iguana. Earlier today we noticed a sore half way down his tail. It is rectangular and about 1" x 1/2" in size. It protrudes out from the skin and is dark colored and very rough in texture. I don't don't know how long it may have been developing, because he doesn't complain. He hasn't eaten much for the last week or so, but that isn't unusual for the fall when the weather is cooler in the northeast USA. He is still quite active, but the tail is obviously sore. He won't let me touch it and he moves his body and tail to keep the sore away from me.
Believe it or not, he has never been injured or ill in the last 9 years so we never had a reason to have a vet see him. Does anyone have any idea what the cuse or treatment is for what we are seeing. I plan to treat it topically with antiseptic to prevent further infection, but I don't know if that is adequate. Any suggestions?

Jim.
