I have worked for many years at a vet/teaching university, with extensive animal research. These pictures are from the 70's and earlier, and labs in North America and Europe no longer practice atrocities like this, nor do most other places. Of course, people don't want you to know that.
I had a girl accuse me of contributing to this sort of thing, so on the spot I took her out to my facility. She couldn't believe how clean it was, how well kept the animals were (horses and cows), and how friendly they were. I showed her everywhere, and took her out to the 45 acre free roam pastures we use for horses not on study. Believe me, times have changed. To keep a research dog at the university, you MUST pay for it to be walked and socialized, outside, for half an hour a day, 5 days a week. You MUST also pay for toys and other treats. Horses cannot be on study for more than 2 months, at which point they are turned out for no less than 4 months. Cattle, the same.
In case you have doubts, look at how crude the chips are. Modern chips look nothing like this, and yes I work in IT now. The burn study is quite famous, and from the 60's, and triggered many of the changes that have come to pass, and continue to drive research animal health and welfare forwaards. Yes its horrible, but unfortunately people have problems using other people for new medical procedures. Personally, I think if you have a heart problem, and you want help, than you should be given the option to volunteer for research and improvements. Of course, if they're wrong, you're dead. I can't wait for the day that animal based research is no longer in use, but don't be used by people that are not helping.
Protest week means no dogs get walked outside. Protest week means all farm gates are locked, and the horses brought in from free range, to limited turnout while staff are there, 8 hours a day through the week and 4 hours on the weekend - mornings only. The university animals all suffer a greatly restricted lifestyle during protest week and/or other protest days, and most of the people doing the protesting have no idea how negatively they are impacting things. I would rather see them volunteer to walk dogs, or groom and ride horses, or curry up the cows, there are extensive volunteer programs to do this, but they don't. Its very sad, but one day, things will truly change for the best.
