I saw your pics. Not a bad camping spot, he looks fine.
He may never have been tamed. Don't worry too much. His stresss will not be chronic and long-term. It'll fade as he gets used to his new habitat.
As far as handling him, it's obvious you are very careful. Just grab him up firmly enough to suppress his strugles to get away or bite (if he's big enough to hurt). Frantic igs are daunting until you get the hang of it.
