no, don't get him a female ig! iguanas mating can be very dangerous for the female, and besides, what would you do with all those fertile eggs the female would lay? what a lot of people do is get their ig a love sock...which can be anything from a stuffed green sock, to a stuffed animal lizard. basically it is just something to fool your ig into thinking it is mating with another ig...
the key to taming is patience and a lot of handling. how old is he? it takes a long time for an ig to be tame. you have to put in a lot of work(interacting with him). get the Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual book by James Hatfield. it has a lot of crucial info in it. do you know a lot about igs? i asked because you said you received him as a gift...here's a site with a lot of cool info:
