Great news for Double D!
Well I can say that since my cage is built out of melamine, it is a bit of a pain to build! The stuff is really heavey and we had to use pegs and brackets. I love how easy it is to clean but maybe the other poster who mentioned covering regular wood has a good idea. We thought about buying some sheets and covering the wood but it was more expensive (she may be talking about another material though). My only suggestions would be:
1. Put it on wheels! This is great for moving it around to get behind or underneath it! (also if it is on wheels, make some ledges that hang down around the bottom so your other small critters don't crawl under the cage! Our bearded dragon is known for squeezing under furniture)
2. Make it out of something that is easy to clean!
3. Whether you make the front out of glass or plexi, you may need extra framework pieces so your sheets of glass/plexi aren't so large. Our glass doors have chipped / cracked in the past so we only use plexi now. Big plexi doors bend and need more support though. If you can find old sliding glass doors to use, you may save yourself a lot of trouble! (these are more durable and have supports already.)
Good luck.
