Actually the whole rice patties arguement is moot since the large flowing finned colorful bettas you see in the petshops are as far removed from the wild species as the fancy bubble eyed goldfish are from a plain old river carp from which they came. Those elaborate flowing fins would effectively prevent them from escaping predators. The reason that they can keep them in the little cups is that they are labyrinth fishes meaning that they can breath air from,... well the air. I agree that the little glasses they display them in are too small but as long as the water is kept clean they will do fine. Anyone that has ever kept them in an aquarium especially with other fish will tell you that they really don't move around that much. Mostly hang in a corner.
