Think about how happy you'll make this iguana *especially* if he's had a rough history. I think it is important to think about the animals just as much as yourself. You said you have a good vet and you obviously have the will, so why not give a less than fortunate iguana a very rich life full of love? You realize the history and have taken responsibility of that past and I think that is very noble.
Of course, for your own good, keep in mind the risks and if you don't think you can handle death, I think you should get a different hobby all together, all pets die. I think it is harder to see a pet die when you've had them for so so long and grown with them, but I suppose this might just be me. When you know an animal is sick or has been, its not as hard for me because I know that they are not sick/suffering anymore. I'd love to give an ig the opportunity to at least live out the rest of its years in happiness! I unfortunately do not have the time or money at this point in my life. Its not just about me, its about the life of an animal. I have to agree with eyespy that learning to deal with death is a very useful thing to learn, especially at a young age.
Just my opinion,
Shanna
