:What I need to know is if an iguana is kept solo, are they more likely to reach sexual maturity at a later date?
Nope. Onset of sexual maturity and first breeding (subsequent ones, too, for that matter) may be delayed by poor diet and environment, but not by the company the iguana keeps. ;)
:When he was only about a year and a half old I briefly had a foster iguana - a female that was about twice his size.
Hey, a guy can dream, can't he? ;) Size doesn't always matter when it comes to mating and territorial dominance.
It sounds like your boy hit sexual maturity and first breeding season on schedule (12 and 18 months, respectively). While a great many male iguanas get aggressive towards their humans during their annual breeding season, the fact is that not all of them do. At one time, I had 17 sexually mature males living here - only one tried to mate with me, another didn't try mating but became very clingy to me and charged everyone (human males and females - he was still totally omega in the resident iguana population) who approached me, and only one of the remaining males got nippy with me as he decided that he was going to the the alpha around here during his season, not me. Silly boy.
Anyway, sounds like you can count your blessings that your boy has (so far!) been largely unchanged, behaviorally, towards you during his seasons.
