Just don't cut too deep....I only cut the sharp tips. I've used many types of clippers but I think the one I have now works the best. They are the kiddie looking scissors with a notch cut out of the blade-- find them at the petstore or oneline.
Unless you like getting bloody, I would recommend it! Of course, my iguana is so heavy now that I get scratches no matter what!
It will affect their climbing abilities some, but not too badly. They grow back pretty fast anyway.
