Got such a vivid mental image of people chasing down gravid iguanas in the wild trying to make them eat......ROFLMAOPMP

Now for the serious stuff....I agree with stuff posted thus far by Hakan, iZ's mom & Stinson. There is a very valid reason why she's not eating..and personally I think she probably IS eating..just not enough that you notice. There is not enough room for her to eat normally. And I do think you can equate it to humans to a certain degree. When I was gravid (LOL) with twins sheesh...I had to eat little meals several times a day after a certain point because there was no room..being short didn't help. The food pushes everything out of place, etc. I can only assume that this may be the case in an iguana. I had great sympathy for Lightning and she and I bonded more during the 2x she was gravid. She would only eat maybe a bite or two then drink. But I always had the food out for her except late at night. I would freshen it up, too, so that it wasn't the same old plate in there for hours getting "yuck." There were times when she did eat more like normal...but she suffered for it. It was me that recognized the signs and put her on my shoulder, walked the floor patting her til she burped. Like I said...I could relate LOL

My best advice would be to ALWAYS keep a fresh supply of water for her. Provide food and let her use her judgment on eating...but do put out some real temptations for her. Use the calcium more often than normal during this time, too. As Hakan suggested you may have to add it to the water supply. Make sure she is walking about every day to build up muscles that she will need to be strong for her when the day comes to "push, push". If possible get her out in real sunshine for at least a few minutes every day that you can.

As for the surgery being dangerous....it certainly can be if performed by an inexperienced vet. We were fortunate that the incident with our female ig could wait til the next day for any surgery since it was not a herp vet that saw her the night of the emergency. The herp vet that we use for her now and did the surgery told us that if a reg. vet had tried to help by spaying that night she'd more than likely be dead. That's because reg. vets know to make the incision in a certain abdominal area. Which is fine for dogs, cats, etc. BUT in an iguana an incision there cuts a major artery & they bleed to death before the vet realizes what the heck they've done.

There are good herp vets out there...you just have to hunt them down LOL Ours was quite confident in his own ability to spay an iguana..had done so many, many times. Yours seems to lack that confidence which would make me want to seek out another vet should you decide to further investigate spaying. If we knew what city Meggy was in, maybe some of us here can suggest someone for you. Some nice ladies here (Sue & Joan) are working on a site that has vets that "we the owners" have had good experiences with and recommend. It's called Herp Vet Connection and is at http://www.angelfire.com/fl/lizardsownus/index.html Don't know if you'll find your state there, however.

Another good source is Dino's website but I can't seem to find it on my list. (I updated to IE 4.0 and messed up my favs. list by accidentally deleting some stuff & I haven't fixed that yet.) But he's on the forum here and you should be able to find his site by looking at a post from him.

Hope everything works out for both of you. I know how scary this is right now. As iZ's mom said, we'll be here for you!
