Hi Mom !
It was me who sent the Mader article on spaying/surgery.
I am glad you liked it.
In your case I shouldn't force feed your iguana. You also say that she is in GOOD condition
so I when your vet is recommending force feeding her it just shows how little he knows on this
subject. I've havent heard anyone recommending force feeding a gravid iguana since I started with iguanas.
And I have been constantly on the Internet and Iguana mailing List (with all those experienced ig keepers
incl. Kaplan, Swofford, etc) since late -95.
Your vet is WRONG: period.
:)
Remember:
- No one is running around chasing gravid green iguanas in the rainforest trying to force feed them !!!!.
Ask your vet about that !!!
....and how can he compare humans and iguanas !??!.
LOL :)
Force feeding your iguana will only mean stress both for your iguana and for yourself. Her stomach should have space
for eggs that she is developing and not for food. It can also be that she can not even metabolize the food
in a normal rate when you are force feeding her if her body has slowed down the metabolic rate dealing with food in her stomach.
What if the food just lay there in the stomach, going slowly bad, taking up space?.
Her body is now ready to make use of the fat deposits (tail, legs eg.) and so on.....sorry Swedish as I am I cant develop this further....
I hope you get my point.
In your case I should try to find a new more experinced reptile vet.
Especially if your planning to spay your iguana and he says that is only a 50-50 chance that she survives.
I would say, maybe 50-50 for him but not for experinced reptile vets.
I can't recall that I have heard about a female iguana that died in connection with a spaying on Internet yet so it can't
be a normal thing. Of course there is a small risk....one of the ovaries is quite tricky to remove......but no, not 50-50.
I can admit I was force feeding my gravid Rex two years ago. But it was only because I did not understand she was gravid !!!.
I hope you make the correct choice. For me it should be simple.
Your vet's advice against IML, Frye, Mader and the "rest of the world" ?
;)
I understand he made a good job and saved your iguana from dying
from MBD some time ago. But it doesnt mean he knows everything.
What your iguana needs is constant access to a bowl with water (pure or with some calcium mixed in).
And then a nesting box that you already said you plan to build.
Best regards
and good luck !
Hakan
