I too have cats. Usually when Sneakers is out with me we put the cats in one room and shut the door so they are confined. However we can't afford sneakers to run off and hide where we can't find her. The cats have to come out of the bedroom sometime. Sneakers is also still small and the leash doesn't seem to hurt the spikes at all. Later when she gets bigger and has bigger spikes I hope to give up the leash. I think that I know the leash that you are talking about. Is it a leather harness that goes around the front legs? I would think that it would be hard to put on. Also the spikes above the front legs are larger than towards the back legs. I use a one that goes just above the back legs. They are easy to make. Go to the sewing store and get a 6ft piece of cotton rope, like they use in jackets. Then get the thing-a-bobber that you find on jackets. Its the thing that you squeeze and it releases or tightens on the string. Get a light weight plastic one. Form a loop and put it through the thing-a-bobber. When you put it on, the rope forms a "V" going into the thing-a-bobber over the back legs. It doesn't even touch the small spikes. I really have to get the name of the what-cha-ma-call-it. Again I can only see this working while they are small. Eventually I can't see where this will not break the spikes.

If Kiwi,(cute) jumps down and starts to run, don't jerk the leash back. Just let her get to the end of her rope. I usually get down on the floor and hand walk up the leash to pick her up. This way it is only her force going forward against the leash and she usually stops. No additional force is applied trying to pull her back. The first couple times of using the leash you may experience some crocodile rolls. Just talk her gently and make sure that the rope doesn't wind around her or her tail.

I have been racking my brains to figure out how to later make a safe leash. If I come up with something I will sure post it.

Hope that helps, Joan
