In Reply to: Amazon dropped his tail today :-( posted by eyespy on August 08, 2002 at 13:36:42:

Don't get down on yourself! It happens to the best of us ^.~ In the wild, it is completely normal for iggies to drop their tails. Amazon will suffer no ill side-effects from this, I'm sure. Just keep it clean.

Tarzan gouged out a chunk out of his tail on his plexiglass door. I was devastated. What a silly little lizard forcing his way between his cage and sliding door. =\ I didn't even apply and ointment on it, because by the time I found him the blood was already coagulated and his tail wasn't inflamed or anything. I just wrinsed the injured portion of tail off under some lukewarm water and let him be. He was out in the sun for a long time that day, and got lots of coos and snuggles. His tail is doing fine, and healing with leaps and bounds.

We all go through some scares with our babies --I know I have had some big ones! lol, but things will calm down and everything will settle down. Its like those Luvs commercials... You try to do everything right, you are so overly protective, but then you get real! Iguana's are very hardy animals. =) Do you think the iggy mommies run around with betadine and clean out all of the iglets wounds? nope! they leave 'em right after their eggs are laid! These little guys are tough, and are real survivors. Millions of years and still just as cute! =P The loss of Amazon's tail is just a small milestone in the many milestones ahead =P Just you wait till you find out if s/he is a m/f! Then eggs and hemipenes/seminal plugs will be all the rave, hahahahaha

lol, good luck with the cutsey baby,

:I feel like the worst humommy in the whole world. It's a gorgeous day here, so we went out to sit on the lawn, with Amazon secured by a hip leash.

:A loud motorcycle went by, and Amazon started to run. When she got to the end of her leash, the tail wiggled like crazy and dropped off.

:I know he can do just fine without it and being so young, it might even regenerate somewhat, but I can't help feeling I failed Amazon. All that beautiful striped tail was my responsibility and I didn't make him feel safe enough to keep it intact.

:Amazon seems just fine, though, floating gently in a Betadine bath. We already had a vet appointment on Monday, so I just plan to keep the end well coated with Neosporin and a bit of surgical glue to keep it clean and dry.

:It's just all so upsetting, going outside with a gorgeous little 14 inch iglet and coming back inside with only 8 5/8 inches left.

:I think I'm going to have a long cry, and then invite some friends over to bury the tail by Amazon's favorite climbing tree.
