Judging by the readings I continually get from my radiometer, in my opion, the decay rate of the UV produced by even the merc vapor bulbs both vertically and "side throw" is such that the vast majority of it will be nearly completely filtered by the time it makes it's way to the outside of just about any enclosure. Outside of the brightness of the bulbs, I don't see how they can do any damage to reptiles adapted to exposure of natural sunlight. Notice I did say reptiles. I personally don't stare at the bulbs either - they ARE bright...;) But other than that... And if someone is, well so inclined let's say, to sit and stare at one of these bulbs for an extended period of time then ......;)
