Maybe the ones near the desert don't live as long or are not as healthy. They are just adapting to the forests being cut down. We have beautiful egrets and water birds here that you see walking through hot tar parking lots or standing in the narrow strip of grass between 6 lanes of rush hour traffic. I'm sure that wouldn't be their first choice of environment! And I doubt they are doing as well as the birds in the everglades... but they do what they can to survive.
