In Reply to: "Crococile roll" scare...longer than expected........SORRY!! posted by Shannon on July 15, 2002 at 22:27:09:
My iguanas have all done this at one time or another. My last one would do it when he got very scared (only a couple times in his life). Sleestack hasn't done it in awhile but he does it when he gets annoyed enough. He has done it when I carry him once in awhile or a couple times in the bathtub when I am trying to restrain him. Constant handling keeps him tame enough so he doesn't freak out and do this all the time, but he is a stubborn ig, and will act up now and then. He usually just flips and does one roll--has never hurt himself.
I have come up with a great method for myself if he does it when I am carrying him. I toss his body up slightly, waiting for him to flip around, and catch him after the flip. There is no way to keep him from doing the roll when you aren't expecting it and this is the only way I have been able to keep holding him. Strangely enough, when the roll does him no good, he usually doesn't try it again for a long time. When he was very young he may have done multiple croc rolls but he was small enough to try to restrain with my hands (with a little difficulty). Sleestack really doesn't like to be held that much so I only do it for short periods as well as have short talks and petting sessions with him (and give treats) just to keep him socialized and let him know who is alpha in this house! ME!
