What kind of cage was it? If it is not a mesh enclosure(but glass or similar), then it is deadly in the sun.
Igs do open their mouths when they get overheated. You should always provide some shade and never leave them unattended for too long. They can take it pretty hot, but if he turned pale, had his mouth open, and seemed stressed out, chances are he was burning up! This is very dangerous. I've heard horror stories of igs dying this way inside a house, but next to a sunny window...so outside is that much worse.
All of my past and present reptiles have been overheated at one time or another outside even in a mesh enclosure...I quickly bring them inside to cool down. Here in Florida, many babies and dogs die from being left in the car for even a short time.
Sun is important, but just provide plenty of shade and water so he can escape when he needs to. And keep an eye on him because the sun moves & shadows change-- sometimes leaving no shade over the cage even though you had shade when you set him out there!
