If there is any way you can travel at night, you can put him in the carrier and he will sleep the whole way. This would be the easiest.
If that is not an option, you can keep him in the carrier with some newspaper, maybe a towel, and some greens to eat. Keep paper towels and garbage bag handy for him pooping (when they get upset sometimes they will). I would not let him sit out of the carrier unless you are traveling with someone else who can watch him closely (and if he is small, I wouldn't let him out either). It is too dangerous to have him distracting you on a long trip...you will endanger your own life as well as his. I speak from experience...they can try to crawl under your pedals, on your face, etc....major hazard!
