Locking top sounds like a good idea to me if young ones might have unsupervised (sneak in) access. Luckily our youngest (8 y/o twins about to be 9) have been around reptiles since they were 2 and are well past the stage of chasing down critters. I have forgotten what kind of set up Sneakers is in.......is he safe from little fingers trying to poke him or worst, little hands poking objects in at him? That's why I prefer the glass or acrylic tanks with screened tops. Knocking on the side isn't pleasant for the reptile but it beats the heck out of being poked. So far all young visitors here have had a healthy respect for our reptiles & not attempted to touch unless one of us adults is holding the pet. But you never know what they can "plot" when you turn your back LOL
I'm glad you are planning to talk about this.....so many bad things could have happened that she just isn't probably aware of and only wanted to pet the pretty lizard. ..... Been there done that with my little girl who ran "full tilt boogie" at a DOBERMAN at our neighborhood pet store to love him. She figured since Marge (the owner) had the dog on leash that he was friendly. Poor Marge dang near had a heart attack 'cos this dog was post-operative & could have reacted defensively. Fortunately for Sarah the dog merely turned away from her. She got lectured by me & Marge.
Hope Sneakers has recovered his "cool" by today. Poor little baby must have been terrified. And thanks for posting, we all need to think about how easily this sort of thing could happen to any of us.
