i got in the habit of checking iZ's nails on a nightly basis and using an emory board on them ... when he was smaller, that was enough by itself ... but even after he got big, it helped keep that sharp little needle-like point from forming ...

it got to be just part of our nightly routine ~ during snuggle time or right after his bath ... if you check the nails every day or even every other, you'll catch the ones that are getting sharp and there's usually only 3-4 that *really* need attention so it doesn't take *ALOT* of patience on the ig's part ...

the sandpaper log sounds like a baaaaaaaad idea but you're headed in the right direction! *grin*
if you have some branches that have nice rough bark still on them, climbing on the rough bark *will* help keep the nails trimmed ~ a bit any way ...
