some universities are becoming more "pet-friendly". If, for example, you are considering biology, natural sciences, or a pre-veterinary program, some of the more progressive schools see keeping animals as a part of the curriculum and have separate housing for those students where they can have animals with them. Not a horse, obviously, but reptiles, dogs, cats and "safe" exotics like ferrets or African hedgehogs are very commonly found in the pet-friendly dorms around my home. I live near Philadelphia, which gets over 25% of its economy from its many universities, so things are competitive here that way. I was in human medicine, but was allowed to keep my frogs and cat with me as long as I lived in the "biology" dorm. That experience served me well, because 2 years after I graduated I also got my certification for veterinary surgical technician. I had the privilege of working with humans 5 days a week and animals on Saturdays.
Shop around for your school and don't be afraid to ask such questions as whether students can keep pets if animals are a major part of their studies. If a school isn't that progressive yet, they should have a service that will help you to find off-campus housing to suit your needs.
It sounds like you and your family are great candidates for iguana slaves and I hope you find a sweet green master to rule over you all.
