: Just when I thought I'd got it all straightened out. I'm just making the switch from the Mk salad to the Iguana Den diet. However, now I'm worried. Her calcium level is elevated. Vet thinks gravid but shes showing no interest in egging box. Have apt. in 2 weeks and I want an x ray. If her calcium is elevated already, will the Iguana den diet send it through the roof. I've calculated my version of the diet to be a 2.7:1 ca to ph ratio. 941mg Ca and 340mg ph and 17.3g protein. Too high in the calcium dept.? I was taking Kevin's advise of keeping the Ca around 1000mg. But then, maybe thats too much right now...sigh...I'm soooo confused. Just trying to mend a very sick friend.
Other than the elevated calcium level, is your ig showing any signs of problems? The elevated blood calcium could be because she's egging. Melissa has an egging doc at her website that lays out the stages in gravidity, week by week. You might look at it at http://www.sonic.net/melissk/ig_egg.html and see if your ig matches any of the stages.
As far as using a specific amount of calcium as a goal, I've not seen that in the veterinary literature, although that doesn't necesarily mean it doesn't exist. What I have seen is that the Ca:P ratio is supposed to be 2:1. Increasing calcium for a gravid animal can help her shell her eggs, but you don't want a Ca:P ratio of over 2:1 on a regular basis.
