I've got a couple at that size that are very male. On an adult, you can tell by jowls, pores, and the bulges after the vent. Dewlap has little to do with it. But on a juvie... All you can do is look at the vent, and MAYBE see a little bulge on each side of the base of the tail. Depends on how old they are and how well "endowed" they are.

: It was 11:30ish and I was sitting around pretending to read a book while really thinking about what I was going to have for lunch. I thought I heard a knock on the door, but ignored it. I live in one of those secured-access buildings where you need to buzz visitors inside. Another knock, but the cat was still sleeping on my feet, so obviously it wasn't on my door. The cat, being a cat, feels that all visitors are here to see him and immediately goes to sniff at the door to see whether he chooses to greet them or hide under the bed.

: The third knock was much louder, accompanied by a familiar voice. "Open up, lazybones! Are you sleeping or what?" It was my friend Mark, a vet who volunteers at the Humane Society. I opened the door and there he was with a cardboard box and a small snake bag inside it. "Here's your iguana, you might want to give it a bath because it's really hot out there. I gotta run, I'm doing a spay at noon."

: So I went into the bathroom, closed the door and opened the snake bag. As if I needed prompting to give a reptile a tubber. That's one of the great joys of herping.

: What do you think, Flavia? Am I a boy or a girl? Mom thinks I look like a boy because of how big I extended my dewlap when she put me in my cage, but I just might surprise her in a year or so.

: Mom blessed my sweet little turquoise snout. I think she likes me!
