I used to work as a surgical vet tech at the Humane Society and one of my friends volunteers as a vet there. He will be going over Amazon (I think that's what I'll call the little dude) with a fine toothed comb and documenting both in pictures and in the chart any problems, no matter how minor.
The abuse case has already been opened. It took 2 weeks to "liberate" the little green guy so that Animal Control could document the store conditions and management's lack of concern for its welfare.
I've been doing rescues of frogs, snakes and smaller lizards since 1978 and work well with these folks. This is just the first time I felt ready to tackle a case where the animal will grow so big! Knowing, of course, that I have a bleeding heart and an open door and end up keeping the animals I rescue about half of the time I had not been so persistent with an iguana case before. I merely reported the incidents and let the authorities decide what to do. But I've been wanting an iguana for awhile now anyway and would never think of buying one from a pet shop. There are far too many that need rescue.
I'll end up paying a $30 adoption fee which is 3 times what they were selling the iguana for, but I feel it's worth it. That money helps other animals in need, plus I know that the store will be watched carefully for 3 years and so they won't just go out and replace this ig with another poor baby.
