D3 should absolutely NOT be administered by any novice/intermediate iguana keeper. If the dosage is not correct, D3 blood levels can easily become so high that it becomes toxic to an iguana. Incidently, this "theory" of not administering D3 and calcium in the same day intrigues me - I'd love to know how you came about this information especially since without D3 iguanas cannot properly metabolize calcium....
If given an appropriate UVB source (fluorescent tube - Reptisun/Iguanalight 5.0 or mercury vapor- Active UV or PowerSun) iguanas will manufacture D3 more than adequately on their own. If diet is correct there should be no problems with vitamin/mineral levels. Oversupplimentation can cause just as much damamge as malnourishment. High levels of calcium will ALSO cause damage...
Only in EXTREME cases should D3 be artificially supplimented and ONLY under strict conditions and especially only when the individual is experienced and knowledgable enough to understand what they are dealing with.....
While I have never personally seen any associations between bananas and iguana intestines I DO know that the phosphorous levels in bananas are such that they should only be given OCCASSIONALLY as treats and NOT on any regular basis.
And unless probed by a QUALIFIED veterinarian, the sex of an iguana usually cannot be determined until at LEAST 1-2 years of age....
