Spiny Tail Iguanas are meat eaters, and they have carnivour teeth. Spiny tail iguanas are ground dwellers, but can climb and live in trees as well as green iguanas. Both species are known to habitate together, especially in South Florida where there are multiple ferrel colonies. Unlike green iguanas, spiny tail iguanas usually only grow to approximately 4 feet in length. Their coloration varies depending on their surroundings, but usually is in the gray/white to black/gray areas, though they can and do get bright orange during mating season. Spiny tail iguanas can be tamed as long as they are handled frequently from an early age. If they are not handled for a long period of time, they get defensive/protective, and their bite is very painful and damaging. Their teeth are made to tear meat, and they have very strong jaw muscles.
Spiny Tail Iguanas will eat vegetables, however, they need meat to meet their nutritional requirements. Their normal food in captivity starts out as crickets and meal worms and they move up to mice and rats.
