The welder's gloves aren't a good idea. You can hurt your ig because of the lack of feeling when holding it. With the gloves on people have broken their Iguana's bones without realizing how tightly they were holding them. Besides all that they scare the iguana more and will probably cause more thrashing and escape attempts. Just wear long sleeved, thick shrirts and hope for the best.
Good Luck,

: Thanks a bunch! I know I sound like such a wuss.. but I am afraid. However, I will start trying to tame him. My son worked with him very little. Perhaps once a week he would take him out of his cage. He didn't hold him on his chest or shoulder like I've seen other people do. He would just hold him like on his lap maybe. But if he didn't hold on to him firmly he would run away. My son would also almost always use gloves so I'm thinking our iguana is not very used to hands. The site for the Iguana society recommended using welders gloves. I am going to get a pair and hopefully our iguana will get used to me as well as me getting used to him.
: I know animals sense fear so Im a little nervous about that part too.
: Thanks again, Joe... I appreciate all the help!

: : Dont be so scared of the bites or holding it.
: : An ig's bite is less worse than a ticked off monitor lizard!
: : The key is never to approach from above the animal, but from the side or underside. If from above, the hand is viewed as a predator, and snap!
: : The only concern after a bite is infection and salmonella. Keep ur hads clean before/after handling, keep the iguana n cage clean, n u'll be fine.
: : Some suggest putting ur hand in the cage, and just pet it and give it a treat or two. Do this for a week so mr hand becomes familiar to the animal.
: : Later, try handling. Prior to that, escape-proof the room, they can be fast, and sqeeze in tight places.
: : with patience and some tlc it should be ok in about a month. depends how much ur son has tamed it in the past.
: : keep the experience simple, pleasant as possible, and stress free. start with five or ten minutes, and work up to 20 minutes.
: : reward with treats. reading a book or surfing the web is a good way of 'handing out' with the ig.
: : im sure others will add more stuff to this post to help u out.
: : good luck!
