They do like to eat carpet for some strange reason, so it wouldn't be the best substrate...plus it is messy to clean. I'd stick with newspapers or astroturf.

The Zoomed 5.0 light has a long standing reputation. If you have more money to spend, you can go for the Active UV or Zoomed Powersun bulb. I finally ordered an Active UV for my iguana, but my bearded dragon's cage is better suited for the Zoomed 5.0. (the Active and Powersun lights are $45-70 but they last longer and give off more UV light). You can get them cheaper online.

I don't use a heating pad at all, but make sure my temps are warm enough and use a ceramic bulb at night that heats the cage with no light. If you do use a heating pad, use it only in one part of the cage so he can get away from it, and keep it on low. After rescuing my last iguana who was burned all over his underside from a heat rock, I just only use under belly heating for emergencies... haven't found them necessary except maybe when I take him somewhere without his cage.

It sounds like you are doing a great job...lots of research!
