salmonella

I did a search, and it seems like the majority of salmonella poisonings/research deal on ly with turtles. What is the actual info on this? my son is only 6 and i plan on having more in the near future, so i want to make sure i keep my family healthy, while taking care of the little ig..
Is it fair to say that with hand cleaning after touching/handling i can 99% sure everything will be fine??
