I know alot of people frown on leashes and say they bend spikes etc., but please use one if you can, because although it may pose small problems, what would you rather have, and iguana that doesn't like his leash, or a dead iguana who died either due to being hit by a car or exposure.
My iguana doesn't put up much of a fight anymore, but at first he used to. Now he knows it's part of the process and excepts it. It helps tame them, and besides, when you have the leash on you can let it go and just follow as closely to him/her as possible. That's what I do and it works great. It gives them some freedom, while giving you the piece of mind in knowing that if he/she tries to escape, you will be able to catch him by grabbing the leash that trails them.
There are not many iguanas that can be taken out without a leash. Occasionally I take mine out without one, but it still makes me nervous, because although he's never tried to escape and listens to me quite well, all it takes is one time that he doesn't want to hang around and you've lost your ig.
Good Luck,
