Well I think you are making great progress in the taming department. Sometimes it can take forever and people get frustrated so you should feel good that you notice improvement. It took over 6 months for Sleestack to realize we weren't going to kill him!

As far as heat, it is okay to have a cooler area as you do on the bottom. I would, however, try to raise the basking temperature at the top... you can get a higher wattage bulb for this. Just monitor your temps with a thermeter and make sure he isn't so close to the lights that he gets any thermal burns. They do like it hot though. Also, when you get a chance, buy another fixture for your night bulb and use timers to turn them on and off (cheap and awesome) because you never have to touch your lights except to adjust the timers during daylight savings time or change the bulb when it burns out. They are easy to figure out. You would need two and they can control multiple fixtures.

Most herpers frown on any light at night. I have used it before myself..making sure I got the darkest bulb I could find (ESU makes a dark one). Finally I forked out the $30 for a ceramic heat light which screws into a regular socket but gives off no light. You will notice they do sleep better in the dark. If he has a hidey hut near the warmth, he can get away from your black light if you don't want to change it at this time. The ceramic ones are supposed to last a few years which actually makes them worth the money. Others use heat pads or heat panels. I am a big fan of heat from above rather than heat from below since my first rescue was so badly burned all over his underside. (not to say they can't get burned anyway, but none of mine have)

hee hee...this photo is of Sleestack NOT enjoying attention!
