No, no veiled threats were made. I was simply illustrating that your actions, if executed in the state of New Hampshire, could be construed as animal cruelty and had you been caught performing them in that state, you could have been charged with cruelty and practicing veterinary medicine without a license. Nothing veiled about that at all. But for the record, had I been the one to find out that you were doing this and if it were being performed in that state, I would have made a phone call. Nothing veiled about that either. And instead of being "condescending" would you prefer that I be blatant and state my opinion that it was a straight up boneheaded and irresponsible move on your part to suture the wound yourself...Whether you consider yourself a "hick" or not doesn't figure into my statement at all. Personally, if given the choice, I'd rather live out in the middle of nowhere myself. If I did, though, it would most certainly figure into my decisions as to which, if any, animals I would be willing to take on as a responsibility.
I have to say that what you describe for your setup does sound excellent. Nicely done. But if you don't have a qualified vet within reach then I whole-heartedly stand by my statement that by bringing an exotic animal home, ESPECIALLY if this was not an impulse purchase, knowing that there was no qualified medical care available you acted irresponsibily. And it is for reasons such as this that my "attitude" is based in the mindset that it is. And it needs no adjusting - it's always been this way. Anyone on this board can attest to that.
As I stated earlier, there ARE certain procedures that can be performed by experienced keepers of almost any animal provided that they are performed under the guidance of a qualified veterinarian. Surgical procedures, even minor ones such as suturing a wound, are most definitely NOT something that should be done by an untrained individual. Would PAIN, by any chance, have been a possible reason that the iguana wouldn't hold still maybe? Would anesthetic, either local or general, have helped the situation go more smoothly? Was the equipment and environment that you used adequately sterilized?
Since you chose to do this anyway, I'm not necessarily concerned with your answers. I only hope that any others that happen to read this will realize the potentially serious consequences that they may face should they decide to ever take any similair actions. Hopefully, there will be no infection that could potentially turn into something gangrenous which, at the VERY least would jeopardize the associated limb if not the entire life of the iguana. Good luck.
