Jennifer..have you checked out Jen Swoffords web site on cage design? She has her cages
outdoors..with nothin but plain old mother earth
as floorin. Unless you fertilizd your grass recently I don't think its a prob. Its the chemical in pesticides that are harmful. I remember Feo eating fresh dug up dirt (a little gopher mound) when I used to keep him in a backyard enclosure with no floor(secured by tent stakes). He loved the dandelions that would occasionally crop up, just rip them suckers right off (better than a goat!) Food, water, shaded area, climbing fun .Monitor your ig at least once an hour. Sprtiz Ig with water if looks like he/she is gettin too hot. If temps are exceeding 90 degs I'd monitor more frequently the heat makes em more active & tend to get dehydrated & if your Ig is anything like Feo..he isn't smart enuff to go get a cool drink!
Go for it & if its a choice between fresh wet greens or a beetle which do you think its gonna choose? I don't know where live..but the only thing I would be concerned about is snakes (some people live in really rural areas!)getting at it. So you'd have to use your judgement if where you live is safe for Ig to be outside period.
Enjoy!
