In Reply to: arent marine iguanas subspecies? posted by Ian on May 04, 2002 at 15:48:46:
"Iguanas are found within the suborder Sauria (all lizards), the family Iguanidae, then sub-family Iguaninae.
All within this level are called "iguanas"
They are then broken into the following genera:
- Amblyrhynchus = marine iguanas
- Brachylophus = Fiji iguanas
- Conolophus = Galapagos land iguanas
- Ctenosaura = spiny tailed iguanas
- Cyclura = rock(land)iguanas
- Dipsosaurus = desert iguana
- Iguana = our green friends
- Sauromalus = chuckwalla's
With the genus Iguana, there is only 1 SPECIES, That being iguana. (hence Iguana iguana)
But there is still listed 2 SUB-species, to which I commented in my previous post.
HTH,
Craig
