Hi Pete,
I'm so glad you came here for ideas and feedback! It's great that you're building a new cage for your son's iguana.
As for the cat litter...I would recommend against that idea. Although you may get the "dust-less" stuff, it will still stick to your iguanas bum after he/she goes to the bathroom. PLUS, Iguanas have a tendency to lick everything...regardless if they are well fed or not. That's how they smell and get a feel for their environment. There's no getting around the fact that they lick everything!
Even a few granuales of the clay from the litter could over time, form a hard, clay ball in the stomach of your iguana and cause big health problems.
The BEST "litter", if you will, for an iguana is plain old water. They love to go to the bathroom in it and it makes clean up SO easy! Plus, having a tub of water inside the cage helps with the moisture content of the air and keeps your iguana well hydrated.
What we do that has worked VERY well is we keep a big, shallow plastic Rubbermaid tub out for our iguanas at all times. We keep an inch or two of water in it. When an iguana needs to use the bathroom, he simply climbs down off his perch and uses the plastic tub, and then he goes on his way. If he licks the water (as he always does to make sure he's in the right "toilet", the water will be good for him as opposed to licking cat litter).
Then all we have to do is pick up the rubbermaid tub, carry it into the toilet and flush all the contents and we're done for the day! It's really clean, the water hydrates the iguanas while they're in it and the water makes the clean up so easy!
Again, I commend you for coming here to get our ideas and advice. I can tell your iguana is well taken care of and that you really do want to do what's best for him.
Come here often and ask all the questions you want! Together, we'll all get it right and our iguanas will be better off for it!
Diana
