not sure if mine if male or female

I adopted 1 of the 2 iguanas from my gf's cousin. at that time both ig. were about the same size, not about 10 months later her cousin's ig. is almost a foot longer than my ig. but my is still green and his is kinda fade out. I am not sure if I have a female or just that mine grow slower, but the cousin thinks mine is a female cuz of its small size and slow growing rate. I am so confused, during the winter my ig. was very hyper and restless and I thought it only shown in male, also he pooped all over and had this white stuff coming out of him occasionally, can someone tell me a good way to tell from a male or female??
oh one time I saw this stuff came out its vent like a piece of red meat, it kinda "moved" out the vent and went in after a few seconds, what was that?? kinda nasty i think...thank you for the help
