If necessary, throw a thick towel over him, or use some welding gloves. If you use the towel, he won't be able to see, and will not struggle as long or as hard. Use a dog carrier (borrow one, if necessary) to haul him to the vet. If he has an abcess, or something worse, you have a responsibility to get him vet care. The vet will be able to get him in and out of the carrier for you.
