We just got him the poor chap from someone who knew nothing about them. He has him cramped in a 30 gallon with nothing to climb on and has been feeding him ONLY kale. He never tried to handle him and probably only dropped food in as far as giving him attention.
We want to get him in a better home asap, but the problem is that we take care of other exotic animals and so money can be tight between them. He was an adoption type of deal. The owner didn't want him anymore and knew we were "in to this type of thing" so of course we took him in. We adore these precious creatures and so for the past week we've been bulking up on iguana care. It only took about 10 minutes to realize that he wasn't being kept very well.
So no, I have not tried to handle him. I am honestly not sure how to go about it! The poor dear can barely stand us being in the same room with him much less putting a fresh water and food dish in much less trying to hold him!! Plus to be quite honest, he freaks me out with all his tail whipping. I'm not so much afraid of what he'll do to me (biting or what not) I'm just skittish around him and so I jump and let out a yelp every time he does it. :) I'm used to the lazy apathy of White's Tree Frogs. :) So anyway, I do think we'll have to get some gloves, if for nothing else a good tail whipping. I think he's just scared. He doesn't seem mean at all, just scared. The poor thing is probably so stressed out!!
We got him a hammock so he has a shelf and there is some nice wood (branches) on the way here. He's been getting a better diet and UV lighting (god only knows what kind of light he was getting before) and so I think he's going to be ok. I might have to throw a towel over him to move him to a new tank, but maybe that will help him settle down.
Sorry for going on and on. I feel like I adopted a child! I am enjoying him, just wishing he'd enjoy himself too, ya know? :) Didn't mean to turn this forum into my iguana journal, but its everyone's help and support has really been helpful!
