I am adopting a green iguana from someone who cannot have it anymore. It was giving to me because I have experience with other herps, but quite different ones (frogs). I've been doing a bit of research and I went to check him out today. I quickly saw a bunch of changes that will probably have to be made, but let me make sure that I'm getting this all right.
Substrate: reptile carpet
Lighting/heat: Basking temps in the mid 90's, everywhere else, mid to high 80's. I'll have an ultraviolet basking light plus he'll recieve sunlight from a near by window.
Humidity: There is a humidifier in the room (for other animals) so it will be more humid that without, but I'm not sure of a percentage.
Housing: He's in a 30 gallon long tank right now. I'm sure this should be much taller, but I really can't afford to get him anything taller right now, that'll be a working project. Right now he has almost nothing to climb on besides some crappy drift wood (which isn't big enought to climb on at all). I'll add a bunch of branches.
He has a tiny water dish, I'd like to give him one that is almost large enough to soak in (is this good)?
Food: I think I've got the food down. I went to a site that was recommended on this site and got a good list of good foods as well as bad and toxic foods.
I know not to put plants in, but what about fake plants, will he try to eat them? I have this thing that has some fake plants "growing" on it and it might look nice as a furniture. I can of course ommit it if it will not be good.
He's really not a very big guy. I would say he's probably about 10-12 inches (including tail) and not very fat. I do think that the present owner knows even less than I do based entirely on the tank set up and care instructions he left me with.
I did read that kale is not so good for iguanas (is this true)? This is ALL that this guy was feeding him.
Well, thank you for your time. Perhaps when I've got it all set up, I'll post a picture and I can give you a better idea of what it will look like.
Thanks,
Shanna
