it's NEVER a matter of how well an animal is *trained* when you're trying to clean/care for an "owie" ... it's a matter of how much the animal TRUSTS you + i think that's *especially* true for an ig ... and trust is something you have to earn over time ... your ig bit cuz he was scared to death and had no clue *what* you were gonna do to him ...

well, i *did* warn ya messin' with an ig's mouth is tricky ... :)

not sure what to tell ya about how to make him let go ... iZ thinks i taste yechy and so he chomps and spits me right back out ... (btw, at 6' when they chomp, they tend to hit bone ...)

clean your wound out really good and pile some antibiotic ointment on ... 1st sign that it looks infected (red, swollen, etc) get to the vet ~ i mean ~ get to the doctor ...

1) You said there may be an underlying cause or something else wrong with the Ig and this mouth rot is a sign. What else did your Ig have?
nooooo ~ i said "... stomatitis IS a secondary infection ~ which means something is going on somewhere else in the ig's body, the infection spread + is now causing sores in the ig's mouth ... " and ...
"while me + the vet have *theories*, we don't know for SURE what the underlying problem is/was ... "

2) what did your vet do/prescribe?
Baytril (generally the antibiotic of choice for igs) ... i clean iZ's mouth out and clean the pus off the top of his head where the scales fell off because the inside of his mouth was swollen + there was no where else for the pus/infection to go ... we're down to once a day now ~ before it was 2-3x a day ...

3) If you don't mind, about how much did this cost?
trip to the Animal ER + 10 days worth of Baytril = $125
trip to vets during regular hours for re-check + more Baytril = $80
trip to vet, 2 xrays + stomach medicine = $120
trip to vet, 1 xray + more tummy meds = $85

add to that prob'ly another $60-120 for 1-2 more courses of Baytril ...

iZ chose NOT to let me know something was wrong until it was WAAAAAAAAAAY WRONG ...
you are prob'ly extremely lucky that you noticed the little sore in Jupiter's mouth when you did ~ get to the vet and chances are that 10-14 days of Baytril will clear everything up ...

also
keep in mind that iZ has other MAJOR concerns going on ~ he's got diminished renal function and so when an infection gets him, IT GETS HIM cuz his body can't fight back as strong ...
